Collecting Calennig

A popular tradition in days gone by, groups of boys used to go from house to house on New Year's Day to wish the household health and prosperity in the forthcoming year. They used to carry apples decorated with evergreen leaves, and to sing rhymes and 'penillion' on the doorstep. Although apples are no longer carried, the old tradition of collecting calennig still exists in many parts of rural Wales, where children collect money for their penillion singing on the first day of the year.
