Description
Aberavon RFC was formed in 1887 although an Afan team comprised of players from Aberavon, Cwmavon and Taibach had played other local sides since the late 1870s. In January 1897, wing-forward Dan Jones became the first Aberavon player to play for the Welsh national side, scoring a try against England on his debut.
While the inter-war period was bleak for the Welsh national team, it proved to be one of the finest in Aberavon RFC's history. It won the Welsh Club Championship for four consecutive seasons between 1923 and 1927. One of the club's star players was winger Johnny Ring, who scored 46 tries in the 1920-21 season. The club became known as 'the Wizards' when the Evening Post reporter described the team as 'the Wizards of the West' following their outstanding performance against Newport on 22 November 1924. The wizard emblem was adopted after the Second World War.
