William Cocker about 13 years of age I live my
Mother Ann Davies Wife of Evan Davies who keeps the Sailors Return
Beerhouse Commercial Road Pillgwenlly Parish of Saint Woolos
I have been apprenticed to William Stevens a
Blacksmith at Pillgwenlly for about 6 months
and have worked there until last week when Stevens
told me he was out of work & should not want me for
a week or a fortnight - - Besides my master
one Edward Brockley [Brickley] worked in the Shop & myself-
I recollect the Monday morning that the Chartists
came to Newport - I went that morning to the Shop
about 7 Oclock My Master was there & told me
I should lose a quarter (that is until 9 Oclock for
not [sic] having there by 6) I did not seeEdward Brockley [Brickley] there
I went to my Brother's Stable & heard the Mob hurra[h]ing towards the Waterloo and then went home to breakfast
after breakfast I went to the Shop - my Master was
shutting the Shop shutters he told me I might
go home for there would be no work that day - I
did not see my Master again on Monday - I saw E
Brockley [Brickley] about 1 Oclock about 3 doors from Davies
& Tapson's shop- I asked him where he was going - He
said not far only to have a pint of beer - he went away
& I did not see him afterwards - Both my Master &
Brockley [Brickley] & myself were at work all day Tuesday on Wednesday
morning when I went to the Shop Neither Stevens nor

Brockley [Brickley]were there & the Shop was locked - Stevens's wife
told me that master was gone to Chepstow to bury his Unc[le]
& told me to go down to Edwd Brockley's [Brickley]house as he had
the key of the Shop - I went to E[dward]B[rockley]'s house & his wife
told me he was gone to the Shop - I went back but he
was not there I asked my Mistress for the key of the doors
to try & open the Shop to let the haullier & Sailor have
the chains & things they wanted - which she did
There was no on in the Shop - I did not see my Master
again until Saturday when he came back to work -
Edwd Brockley [Brickley] came back a week last Monday -
I asked him where he had been - he said he had been
home to Ireland to see his mother who was very bad
