Description

George Edward "Ted" Owens was born in Pembroke Dock in 1924. He spent much of his youth hunting with his grandfather and joined the fire brigade as a teenage messenger when World War Two broke out. Ted was called up for military service at the age of 18 and found himself at a Royal Marine training camp. He was then chosen to join the Royal Marine Commandos. He landed on Sword Beach on D-Day and later fought his way along the coast of France to Dunkirk. Whilst serving, Ted was injured three separate times: first by a shell or mortar bomb, then by a landmine and finally a bullet. Ted was demobbed shortly after VE Day and returned to Pembroke Dock where he re-joined the fire brigade and married Laurie, a former plotter for the Royal Air Force. He has been awarded the Legion d'honneur for his service in the liberation of France. In 2019, he retraced his journey through the war for an ITV special entitled "Lest We Forget." On the 77th Anniversary of D-Day Ted attended the WW2 Veterans Celebration, organised by Age Cymru Dyfed in Aberporth. There he met fellow D-Day veteran Tony Bird, who remarkably lives just a few minutes from Ted. Ted and Tony had never met before.
