Description

The 14th summer Olympics were held in London, July 29 to August 14, 1948. Britain was still recovering from WWII and the event was referred to as the austerity Games as there was no time or money to build an athletes village. Around 4,000 competitors were accommodated in RAF camps, colleges and schools around London.

In 1948, Maldwyn ap Rhys, born near Swansea, was working at his first teaching appointment as PE Teacher at the County School, Willsden, who were selected to host to the Korean Olympic Team. It was the first time Korea competed as an independent country and Maldwyn was appointed Team Caretaker.

The Team won 2 bronze medals that year, Kim Sung-Jip Middleweight Weightlifting on  10 August; Han Soo-Ann Men's Flyweight Boxing on 12 August. Also, there was one female athlete among the squad, Pak Bong-Sik, who took part in the Women's Discus Throw and was the first woman to represent South Korea at the Olympics.
