Description

The Official Guide to Pontypridd and Treforest Trading Estate, published by Pontypridd Urban District Council, 1939. The guide is made up of 44 pages.

The guide begins with six adverts for various businesses based in Pontypridd and the surrounding area. These include Phillip Bros overhauls and repairs garage, Hayward Photography, Treforest Mouldings LTD toy producer, Phillips Brothers Printers LTD, as well as other adverts posted by the local council.

The guide includes black and white photographs, maps - including fold-out street maps - and descriptions of sites in Pontypridd, the surrounding area, and the Treforest Trading estate near Cardiff.

The guide then goes on to provide the reader with information on the town of Pontypridd, with sections on: Pontypridd and the Coal Trade, The Famous Old Bridge, Developments in the District, Local Administration, Pontypridd Urban District Council, Education in Pontypridd, Medical Care of Children, Secondary Education, Public Libraries, and Public Services. Images of Pontypridd from the time period are also included, with images of the Old Bridge, Municipal Buildings, Sunken Gardens, Memorial Statue, and a map of the area. The guide includes an advert for the nearby Treforest Trading Estate and a page of information on the estate itself. The guide goes on to list education facilities and clubs in the Pontypridd area, and lists tourist information including sights and attractions.

The guide then returns to the topic of Treforest Trading Estate, describing in great detail the history of the estate, and how it came to be. The estate was developed from the end of 1936 and by the end of July 1939 there were 80 factories on the site. The aim was to provide employment opportunities for South Wales, which had suffered badly from the depression in its major coal and steel industries. This section of the guide is also filled with adverts for businesses based on the estate. The booklet then returns to cover the topic of Pontypridd, talking about businesses within the area with advertising for said businesses following over the subsequent pages.

Depository: Pontypridd Museum.
