Producer gas is fuel gas that is manufactured by blowing through a coke or coal fire with air and steam simultaneously. It mainly consists of carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen (H2), as well as substantial amounts of nitrogen (N2). The calorific value of the producer gas is low (mainly because of its high nitrogen content), and the technology is largely obsolete, but in the absence of a piped town gas supply at Dolgarrog it was used in the carbon factory at Dolgarrog to bake the anode blocks which were 10"x10" by 12". The "green" pressed blocks were baked in the Mendeheim kilns. Baking at 1400C took about a week to complete. The carbon factory was originally erected on Tyneside, but was moved to Dolgarrog in 1912.
