Description

Another artist who recorded several views of Llanthony was Sir Richard Colt Hoare, inheritor of the Stourhead Estate. He was one of the great antiquarians of the 19th century, and led the first archaeological excavations of Stonehenge.
Prevented from travelling on the continent due to the Napoleonic wars He travelled in Wales in 1804 in company with David Cox following and translating Giraldus Cambrensis. He recorded the Abbey from several directions.
