Description

In his later years the prolific author, Arthur Machen (1863-1947), suffered from considerable financial difficulties. To help him a close friend began a campaign to encourage members of the literary world and other admirers of Machen's writing to contribute money to help him out.

This letter, signed by the likes of T. S. Eliot, George Bernard Shaw and John Masefield, was sent as part of this campaign.
