The King and Queen visit Swansea after Swansea's Three Nights Blitz
Personal Memories:
When the King and Queen visited Swansea following the Blitz of February 1941, they were driven to Milton Terrace where they were able to view at first hand the devastation that had been caused to Swansea by the three nights bombing by the Luftwaffe.
When residents of Milton Terrace heard that the Royal Visitors were on their way, Mrs Mary Bowen and her daughter Mrs Olwen Owen, holding her baby son David, dashed out hoping to see the Royal Visitors. The King and Queen were accompanied by officials including the Chief Constable of Swansea. As the Chief Constable recognised Mrs Owen as the wife of Police Officer/Fireman Sidney Owen, who had been fighting fires throughout the war, he explained to the King and Queen that Mrs Owen was the wife of one of his men. The Queen then proceeded to ask Mrs Owen and Mrs Bowen about their experiences during the bombings and sympathised when she was told that Mrs Bowen's house was one of the many that had had a direct hit but the family had survived as they had taken shelter in the understairs cupboard of their house.
The family was delighted and very proud to be singled out to be presented to the King and Queen. (Carole Jones)
