Description
This enigmatic stone head, carved from quartz rich red sandstone, was discovered while ploughing a field at Hendy farm near Llanfairpwllgwyngyll on Anglesey during the 1950s. It is widely believed to date from the late Iron Age and that it depicts a Celtic deity or god. Its top is slightly flattened and the mouth has a drilled opening to one side; both features suggest that offerings were made to the head as part of a ritual or ceremony.
The head is on loan to Oriel Môn from the family of the late Eluned Olloson.
