Description

Drawing by Falcon Hildred
Coal office, Blaenau Ffestiniog; interior, looking towards counter, 1980
Pencil and watercolour on paper.
Falcon made two drawings of the interior of the coal office at the railway goods station in Blaenau Ffestiniog, recording the interior with his characteristic eye for detail. Of particular note is the tall wooden counter, a coat hung up on a well-placed nail, and the bundles of papers in bulldog clips and spiked onto a bill-hook dangling from the ceiling. The lamp by the desk is a railway light. The companion drawing detailed the pot-bellied stove that kept the clerk from freezing to death in winter. This coal office was typical of small industrial offices all over Britain. It has since been demolished.
