Llanymynech – 'church of the monks', llan, definite article y, and meneich, possibly indicating a monastic cell or oratory. Llanymynech has been identified with Banhenic, the birthplace of St Beuno, on the supposition that this was a corrupt form of Llanymynech and that Beuno's name survives in St Bennion's well but the evidence is inconclusive. All that we know for certain is that Banhenic was near the river Severn. Llanymynech is well known because it straddles the national border.
