Volunteer Jason is the face of campaign

A YOUNG volunteer from Cardiff has become one of the faces of a new campaign aimed at getting young people involved in lifesaving and volunteering.

Jason Venables, 20, is the star of a video on the new St John Cymru Wales youth section website, which has been developed to show youngsters aged between five and 25 the benefits of volunteering with the charity.

"St John Cymru Wales has a lot of things to offer," said Jason, who has been a member of St John for 10 years.

"You can compete in competitions, attend conferences, and also travel to overseas countries.

"It's improved my confidence loads. In 2010 I got to travel to Zambia and help train 3,500 school children in first aid and lifesaving skills. One of the best things about the organisation is you feel part of a big family - everyone is really, really friendly and easy to get to know."

The newly-launched website, which has been funded with support from Wales Council for Voluntary Action, explains how people aged from five to 25 can get involved with the charity's youth section, either by becoming a member of Badgers, St John Cadets, as a youth leader, or by becoming an adult volunteer.

Keith Dunn, St John Wales' Chief Executive, said: "Young people are our future, and St John Cymru Wales is proud to provide many opportunities and development programmes for individuals.

"These programmes help teach vital lifesaving first aid skills, provide a place to create friendships and opportunities for lots of exciting new challenges."
