Description

Copy of letter written to Captain A Walter at Bar of Pelotas by Thomas Benbow Phillips at Rio Grande, dated on 10 January, 1874

Thomas Benbow Phillips thanked Captain Walter for his correspondence of 4t January and the account which was enclosed. The Captain was obviously not happy with the money with which he was credited. Thomas Benbow Phillips explained that the Captain was credited with the amount of wages he had earned, and that he owed the ship the amount of £76-9-3. Thomas Benbow Phillips also explained that he had allowed the Captain the amount which he had charged in his book for the Rio de Janeiro disbursment, but that the Consul had stated that he was not allowed the money from the Rio account. Those accounts were incurred through his incompetence as Master of the ship when he sailed into Rio in distress, and it was considered that Captain Walter was therefore legally responsible for the full amount of those bills incurred.
