Description
Rhys Evans was born 1 May 1861 in Kenfig Hill.. He was a born musicianed. Moved with his family to Porth in his late teens. He formed the Cymmer Childrens Choir. Salem Welsh Baptist Chapel, Porth, quickly recognised his talents and he was duly appointed Precentor in succession to Mr William Rees. Amongst his many accolades, he formed the Porth & Cymmer Male Voice Choir and the Porth Harmonic Society. Both enjoying great success at multiple Eisteddfoddau. A coal miner by day and conductor all other times. His dedication has been recognised in many old newspaper reports. Besides his obvious talents he is described as 'popular' and 'genial'.
A Batchelor for his entire life, he passed away 29 Oct 1944 and was laid to rest with with sister, brother in law niece in Trealw. The Rhondda Leader dedicates a whole column to his memory and funeral.
I am proud and humbled to know he was my 2 x G Uncle.
