Description

Title: Market Day / G.B. Campion. Litho / London. Published by Ackermann & Co. 96, Strand. / Printed by J. Graf.
Description: This print shows an old woman selling ducks, a young woman, an old man and live chickens in a cage. This probably does represent a Welsh scene since some of the women in the background are shown carrying containers on their heads – a practice apparently rare in England. The women’s costume is not typically Welsh – it is finer than in most Welsh costume illustrations – but other than the bonnets, the essential elements are Welsh (but not uniquely so) – the goffered cap and a fine shawl over a striped gown and separate sleeves on the lower arms. The elderly woman has a quilted skirt and the younger woman is wearing a pink and white striped bedgown (the short tail is just visible on the right) but it is not clear whether the blue and white striped item round her next is a large collar (typical of bedgowns in north Wales), or a shawl. The man’s costume is typical of that worn by a man in Wales during the late 18th to early 19th century with buckled shoes, breeches, waistcoat and long coat, but is probably his Sunday best.
