17/2/1917 my grandfather's vessel SS Iolo sunk by submarine off Cork, two casualties and the captain,1st engineer and gunner taken prisoner, the rest of the crew managed to reach the Irish coast. The ship was carrying coal from Cardiff to northern Italy 3,500 tons, attacked and sunk by the U60. My grandfather was Levi Rees Davies who was born at Rogerswell farm Llansadwrnen, Laugharne. He was awarded the Mercantile medal and ribbon and the British Merc medal. He survived the war and retired from the sea 1939, he then farmed Mapsland farm Laugharne until his death in 1946
