Description

This is a simple system introduced in the 1960s to test for noxious gases in coal mines. It was used in the Cynheidre Colliery.

The two bulbs shown were used to extract methane air mixtures from the roof or roof cavities, and feed into a gas detector or specially adapted flame safety lamp. This would determine the percentage of methane present. The wooden baton would have been used to sounds the roof for cracks and also, used to ram 'stemming' into a shot-hole on top of the explosive. Robert Price, Electrical Engineer, worked at Nantgarw and Cynheidre.
