Holywell and District

The Holywell and District archive is a legacy of the, now dissolved, Holywell and District Society’s Community Archive.

The Holywell and District Society was formed in 2007, when a group of individuals with similar interests in the local area decided that information on the history and environment was not being shared and recorded. The Society had interests in local history, archaeology, environment, landscape and habitat. It undertook recordings of numbers of birds and butterflies in the Greenfield Valley as part of a national project. The Society also played a part towards the historical record of the town. Members of the public brought photographs, postcards etc. which were then scanned into a computer database building up an archive covering a number of activities and persons in local life. There was also an active research group.

Sadly, Covid had a detrimental effect on the society and its members and the decision was taken to dissolve the society on Dec 31st 2023. Following the demise of the society, the committee allocated its assets between local societies and institutions: books and CDs were donated to Flintshire Historical Society, Holywell Library, Greenfield Valley Railway Museum and Flintshire Museums. Funds of £500 each have been shared between local author Glyn Jones to reprint his book on the history of the Holywell District, The Thomas Pennant Society, The Greenfield Valley Trust, The Deeside and District History Society, The Rhydymwyn Valley History Society and The Caerwys Historical Society.
