Young People's Digital Diversity Exchange

This project is a celebration of culture and heritage curated through the lens of young people, particularly people from the ethnic minority, as a tool to promote diversity and community cohesion.The project was led by young people, who came from a diverse range of backgrounds to learn and explore their cultural similarities and differences, with the aim of understanding and educating themselves while developing a lasting sense of a wider community. The enthusiasm sparked by our Windrush heritage and the Black Lives Matter movement has deeply impacted many young individuals. They are keen to share their stories, raise awareness, and eagerly seek to educate school children and families about their heritage and Black Welsh History. Central to our approach was the idea of empowerment through agency. Recognising that each participant brings a unique perspective to the table, we empowered them to take the reins of the interview process. Rather than being subjected to external scrutiny, participants were given the opportunity to interview each other, an idea that emerged organically from within the group, fostering a sense of ownership over the storytelling process. In this collaborative setting, barriers were broken down. Building Resilience and Self Esteem through Boxing

Women’s Boxing Wales: Past, Present and Future (WBW) is a sporting heritage project, which documents the experiences of female participants in Welsh boxing. The purpose of the project is to celebrate the contributions they have made to the rich history of boxing in Wales and draw attention to the challenges and barriers that female participants face in the sport. The archive published on People’s Collections Wales includes images and interviews with boxers (amateur and professional), boxing coaches, historians and journalists.This resource can support learners to:1. The Holocaust and Wales: Religious life of...

This resource looks at the religious life of Jewish refugees in Wales. It focuses on two topics: Religious service and cheder, and kosher food.Religion was an important part of life for many Jewish refugees in Wales. Many attended synagogues or cheder (religious schooling). Jewish dietary laws, rooted in religion, specify which foods Jews can or cannot eat. The laws also specify how the food is prepared both before it reaches the home and within it. The Holocaust and Wales: General Paper and Box...

In this collection of resources, the students will learn about the Treforest Trading Estate, near Pontypridd, which was set up as part of the Special Areas Act of 1934. The Act was created to help parts of Britain with high unemployment, and it offered support to businesses to set up in these areas. When the Nazis began seizing Jewish businesses in Germany in the years after 1933, many Jewish refugees fled here to establish their businesses with help from this scheme.By May 1940, 55 businesses started by Jewish refugees were running at Treforest. They provided jobs for around 1,800 local people.In this resource, students will learn about the experiences of the Schoenmann family, who ran a cigarette paper and box factory at Treforest. The Holocaust and Wales: Aero Zipp Fasteners at...

Treforest Trading Estate, near Pontypridd, was set up as part of the Special Areas Act of 1934. The Act was created to help parts of Britain with high unemployment, and it offered support to businesses to set up in these areas. When the Nazis began seizing Jewish businesses in Germany in the years after 1933, many Jewish refugees fled here to establish their businesses with help from this scheme.By May 1940, 55 businesses started by Jewish refugees were running at Treforest. One of these factories was Aero Zipp Fasteners set up by refugee industrialist Joachim Koppel, a Jewish businessman who spent many years of his life in Berlin until he had to flee. Aero Zipp produced metal zip fasteners. They had their factory at Treforest and their offices in London. Collection of Victorian architectural drawings...

A collection of architectural drawings by the Newport architect R.G. Thomas (1820 - 1883).Thomas was an architect and engineer who spent most of his life in Australia, having emigrated from Britain in 1836. He returned to Britain in 1846, where he remained for a period of 15 years, most of which were spent in Newport. During this time he was involved in numerous diverse building projects ranging from a drainage system for a housing estate to designs for cottages and villas and from shop-fronts to schools, churches and town halls. Case Study: Cynefin - Our Welcome

Cynefin - Our Welcome is a community film education project by The Welfare Ystradgynlais. It was funded by Ffilm Cymru Wales and supported by Michael Sheen and the Josef Herman Art Foundation.The Welfare Ystradgynlais’ community arts team worked with Ysgol Maesydderwen, Ysgol Dyffryn Y Glowyr and Syrian families who have settled in Ystradgynlais, to tell stories of refugees past and present. Award winning animation company Winding Snake Productions worked with the community to produce the two animated films that share stories about how people fleeing conflict have been made welcome in Ystradgynlais.This project won the Digital Excellence Award in the Welsh Heritage Schools Initiative Competition 2018. Case Study: Mapping the Model

Mapping the Model was an Arts Council of Wales Lead Creative Schools Project, that took place in Model Church in Wales School, Carmarthen, in the Spring Term of 2018. The project was a collaboration between artist Rowan O’Neill and the Year 4 Creative Group, and was designed in response to the brief prepared by the school: Can an exploration of deep mapping, via Welsh poetry and drama, improve confidence and oracy skills and enhance creative thinking for pupils in Year 4?The challenge of this project was to find different ways of mapping links between the school and the town of Carmarthen, including geography, history and legend. The result was an investigative project around the concept of mapping, that used People’s Collection Wales to digitally publish and record the diverse work created. Victorian Swansea - People and Possessions

What objects did the people of Swansea have in their houses in the mid-19th century? When you visit a museum you will see displays of household objects and everyday items that have survived from the 19th century. Some have been handed down through families, some have been found by archaeologists, some have been bought or borrowed, some have been donated to the museum. Some relate to people's work, some to running the household, some to leisure and pastimes.Objects can tell us a lot about how people lived, how well-off or poor they were and what sorts of materials and manufacturing were available. We can also see what sorts of things were bought and sold, used and treasured, thrown away or lost by people in the past.This Learning Activity has everything you need to run a session yourself in the classroom, and can also link with school workshops at the National Waterfront Museum and Swansea Museum. Case Study: Life of a Roman Soldier

For Kids in Museums Takeover Day 2015, pupils from St Woolos Primary School, were given a tour of the National Roman Legion Museum, Caerleon, including a special visit to the 'behind the scenes' collection area. Here the children saw and held Roman objects that are rarely seen by the public, some of them only recently found at the site. Using what they had learnt as inspiration the pupils then wrote, recorded and starred in their own film. See their fantastic re-enactment of the life of a Roman soldier, living and training in the Roman barracks at Isca (now Caerleon) nearly 2000 years ago.
