Oral History: A Guide for Schools

History is all around us. We only have to ask our own families and communities. They can tell us enough stories to fill a library of books. This kind of history is called ORAL HISTORY.Documents and books often concentrate on famous people and big events. But many people’s experiences and voices have been hidden from history. Case Study: Swansea Windrush Intergenerational...

The Windrush Intergenerational Project was developed by the African Community Centre (ACC), working with young people in local schools, to research the lives of the Windrush generation who arrived in Wales from the West Indies between the 1940s and 1970s.The project sought to bridge the gap between older and younger generations, especially with regards to passing down culture, tradition, journeys, settlement and other experiences. It records and documents the amazing contributions that Black and Ethnic Minority migrants have brought to the UK, and to Swansea/Neath Port Talbot in particular.In total, the project celebrates the lives of ten elders, a combination of members of the Windrush generation and other persons whose contributions have made South Wales a multicultural society.The case study text is bilingual however the video interviews and booklet are available in English only. A collection of architectural drawings by the Newport architect R.G. Thomas (1820 - 1883).Thomas was an architect and engineer who spent most of his life in Australia, having emigrated from Britain in 1836. He returned to Britain in 1846, where he remained for a period of 15 years, most of which were spent in Newport. During this time he was involved in numerous diverse building projects ranging from a drainage system for a housing estate to designs for cottages and villas and from shop-fronts to schools, churches and town halls. Urdd Gobaith Cymru

Welsh youth movement Urdd Gobaith Cymru, or The Urdd, was founded in 1922 to provide children and young people with the chance to learn and socialise in the Welsh language. Today, over 50,000 young people are members of the Urdd and the annual Eisteddfod is one of Europe's largest youth festivals.In 2022 we celebrate 100 years of the Urdd! The first Welshman to be Prime Minister of Britain, David Lloyd George was a Liberal who is credited as being the father of the 'Welfare State' thanks to his People's Budget of 1910. John Cornwell: Colliery photos

John Cornwell was a freelance photographer who took many photographs of collieries, mostly in south Wales and the English Midlands, both underground and on the surface, during the 1970s and early 1980s. He perfected a method of underground photography using the standard colliery lighting and was able to photograph coal faces, roadways, shafts and equipment with amazing clarity. In addition to photographing working mines he also recorded abandoned mine workings, above and below ground. John Cornwell was also well respected in the broader field of industrial archaeology. He published a number of books on Welsh and English collieries. The copyright of his south Wales images are now owned by National Museum Wales.
